AABP Position Statement - On Boundary Issues with Allied Professions

On Boundary Issues with Allied professions

Last updated: September 4, 2008

The AABP recommends the non-veterinary animal trainers and behavior consultants carefully observe the "professional Boundaries" principle of the AABP professional Practice Guidelines. Specifically, aside from being very careful not to appear to "diagnose," "prescribe" or provide a "treatment" or "prognosis" for any medical condition, we strongly recommend that you not even use these quasi-medical terms with regards to behavior. See the theoretical orientation position statement for details on this. The AABP recommends that we take a behavioral approach and use behavioral language in dealing with behavior and leave veterinary care and medical language to veterinarians.
